Local Sports Stars Present Certificates at U Can Shine
Huddersfield boxing star and former WBF Welterweight Champion James Hare and budding ladies tennis player Danielle Brown turned out to present certificates to local children at Thongsbridge Tennis Club at the end of another successful three day course designed to introduce youngsters to life skills and physical fitness.
James Hare and Danielle Brown
Commenting on the involvement of such well known sports stars, course
leader,
local man and globe-trotting ex-professional footballer Shaun Weatherhead
said, "I think this demonstrates the kind of commitment and dedication to
sport and confidence building amongst young people these local sports
personalities possess. I also hope it's a reflection on the quality of the courses we run to teach
youngsters about life skills and how to become good and successful
citizens. Our motto is "Roots to Grow - Wings to Fly" and that sums up
what
we try to achieve with everyone on one of our courses."
Interviewed by Chris Bell on Home 1079FM, Shaun explained in a more detail about what the hugely successful U-can-shine courses had to offer. "We're all about enabling youngsters to develop their full potential", he remarked, "and that doesn't mean turning everyone into world champions. It's about encouraging kids to do their best and set goals and targets in whatever they seek to achieve. Physical fitness plays an important part, but even so, we don't expect everyone to be an Olympic Competitor."
Continuing, Shaun added, "As well as encouraging youngsters on our courses to adopt a more healthy lifestyle in terms of exercise and diet, we also endeavour to teach them a set of life skills which we hope will stay with them and be of benefit for the rest of their lives. Youngsters who have graduated from one of our courses will be the ones who will greet prospective employers with a firm handshake and good eye contact. They will know how to present themselves confidently and understand the importance of friendship, teamwork and achieving results. In short, we look to them to be more confident over their school lives and move on to become the captains of industry and commerce in the future."
Remarking on what he had witnessed at the awards ceremony, boxer James Hare commented, "After all the bad things one hears about youngsters, it's great today to meet with some motivated ones who are looking to the future with confidence and who have obviously enjoyed themselves immensely on the U-can-shine course."
