Head teacher, Mr Gordon Hamilton.

22nd August 2007

‘Over the last few years our levels of attainment at Y6 have been high but we were worried that these levels would not be maintained with the current Y6 cohort due to the issues mentioned above.

In 2004 when these children were in Y2 only 66% of the children achieved L2b+ in reading and 69% in writing - in other words we had a significant number of children who were at L2c or below. Historically our tracking systems have told us that children at 2c might make up ground and achieve a level 4c+ but those children who come into KS2 at a level 1 do not. In previous years we have occasionally had one or two children who might move from a L1 to a level L4 but it is unusual.

As you know we were really pleased when 93% of our Y6 group (all but three of our children - two weren't entered as they were working below L2) gained L4+ in reading and 84% in writing. Considering what we knew about the children this was a remarkable achievement. However what was even more remarkable was the fact that all the children at 2c and four who had previously only achieved L1 at KS 1 went on to get not just L4c's but 4b's, 4a's and in two cases 5c's! What was also interesting was that 15 children out of the 45 in the cohort made three or more sub levels of progress (in reading - 14 in writing)) in one year during Y6.

Now I know that it is difficult to identify one feature of our work that has had an impact on children's levels of achievement/attainment and as you know we work hard as a school to develop not only our children's academic knowledge and skills but also their social and emotional ones too through work in in areas like BLP.

However this has been the first year that we have been involved in U-CAN-SHINE and I feel that this has added and extra dimension to our work and helped give our children the self belief (which is very important) that they can make a difference and achieve things that perhaps previously they did not think they could’
